About Mother's Day

Mother's Day in the United States is celebrated annually on the second Sunday of May. In 2027, Mother's Day falls on Sunday, May 9, 2027. The holiday was officially established in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as a national day of celebration for mothers.

The modern Mother's Day was largely championed by Anna Jarvis, who organized the first official observance in 1908 in Grafton, West Virginia, in memory of her own mother. Jarvis envisioned a quiet, personal day of reflection — though she later lamented how commercialized it became.

Today, Mother's Day is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in the world, observed in over 50 countries — though on different dates. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In Australia and New Zealand, it also falls on the second Sunday of May.

However you celebrate, the most meaningful gift is often the simplest: telling her what she means to you — in her own words, or yours.
